Emblem S-T series
The Emblem S-T series is the successor to the famous Emblem S-H series and stands out with its champagne gold body and dark grey rotor. Like its predecessor, the S-T series was positioned as the entry-level model in the Emblem range. It was likely the best-selling series of all the Emblems, which is hardly surprising given its long production run. A re-released S5000T was even still being sold until a few years ago. When it comes to desirability, however, these reels are less sought after than their predecessors.
History
The Emblem S-H series were entry-level long cast reels, introduced in Japan in 1993 and released for export in 1994. The Emblem S-T series is their successor.
In 1995, Daiwa introduced Twistbuster, a TiN-coated line roller designed to reduce line twist. Like many others, the Emblem S-H series was re-launched with the new roller as the S-T series. ‘T’ stands for Twistbuster. They also gave the reels a new look. First appearing in the Japanese 1996 catalogue, it carried the tagline: “Powerful performance, even when fishing with multiple rods.” In terms of specifications and technical design, they were very similar to their predecessors. The main improvement was the line roller. Furthermore, the model name was now printed on the side cover instead of a sticker, as on other Emblems. A plastic worm shaft gear also replaced the brass one. As entry-level variants in the new Emblem series, they featured only one ball bearing on the pinion gear, a simple handle knob, and no ball bearing in the line roller.
During its production run, there were several variants. The early models feature a bail kicker design similar to that used on the Longbeams and original Emblems. Later models have a different bail kicker, probably to reduce production costs, as the same design was also used on other newer Daiwa reel series. These were still made in Japan. Production was later moved to Thailand to reduce manufacturing costs further. These are easily identified by the ‘MADE IN THAILAND’ marking on the reel foot. The Thai-made version is technically just as good as the Japanese-made one. There are a few small differences, but these are simply component updates Daiwa made over time and don’t affect the quality of the reel.
The Emblem S-T series was discontinued after 2004 in Japan, as in the UK. However, a re-released S5000T was sold in at least France from around 2015 until around 2020.

Releases
In Japan, all four sizes in the series were released in 1995. The smallest models, the S4500T and S5000T, share the same body size and use a 30 mm stroke. The larger S5500T and S6000T also share a common body size, using a 35 mm stroke instead. The smaller models have a high-speed 5.1:1 gear ratio, while the larger models have a slightly different high-speed ratio of 4.6:1. All reels were supplied with a spool reducer.
In 1996, the S-T series was introduced in Europe. In the UK, all but the S4500T were introduced in 1996, while the S4500T was added in 2001/2002. The S-T series was discontinued there in 2004. In France, all four sizes were introduced in 1996. The S5000T was also offered there in at least the 2016 and 2017 catalogues, making it likely a re-release. Information regarding Germany is currently unknown. In the Netherlands, only the S5000T and S6000T are listed in the 1996 Albatros (distributor) catalogue. The series was discontinued in Europe after 2004, as in Japan. Any additional information regarding these markets would be greatly appreciated.
There are at least three variants. The early models feature a bail kicker design similar to that used on the Longbeams and original Emblems and were made in Japan. At some point, this was replaced by a version without the familiar coloured stripe, probably around 1999, when other Daiwa reels featuring the same bail kicker design appeared. A further variant was made in Thailand until production ended after 2004. It is unknown if the re-released S5000T differs from this later variant.

Model comparison
Compared with other updated T-Emblems, the S-T series stands out visually thanks to its champagne gold body, dark grey rotor and dark grey rear covers. The bail kicker has no roller and is dark grey with a silver stripe on the early models, like all others except the Z-T series. The handle with a hard plastic knob is identical to that of the Powercast S30T, but only on the smaller sizes.
Technically, the S-T series sits at the lower end of the updated T-Emblems. These reels feature only one ball bearing, placed on the pinion gear. In terms of body and rotor material, as well as line roller and gear materials, they are identical to the other updated T-Emblems, with the exception of the Z-T series, which clearly stands apart. The S-T high-speed gear ratios are identical to the X-T series, and in the two smaller sizes they also match the Powercast models. The graphite spools lack a polished metal spool lip.
Collectability
The Emblem S-T models are less sought-after within the Emblem series, but their distinctive colours are still popular with some. Having been in production for at least nine years, followed by an S5000T re-release, and selling well thanks to their good value for money at the time, many are still in circulation today. As they are less sought-after and widely available, prices remain relatively low.
