Whisker GS-3000 & GS-5000
The ultimate cult classics! The GS-3000 and GS-5000 feature grey metallic bodies with black rotors and spools, finished with subtle red and gold accents. This striking design has made them absolute favourites among anglers and collectors. Both were released alongside the SS-3000 and SS-5000 as entry-level models, technically with lower specifications. But that certainly hasn’t stopped people paying serious money for them.
The higher-priced GS-5000 is essentially the same as the GS-3000, but it has a deeper spool.
History
Japanese Daiwa catalogue (1990)
From 1987 onwards, Daiwa introduced the 35 mm and 45 mm super long stroke reels. By combining lightweight materials, worm gear oscillation and skirtless long cast spools, they created a range in a class of its own, delivering outstanding casting performance. This family of reels can be split into the front-drag 3000–5000 and 6000–9000 models, and the Procaster 35–45 models without drag.
The 3000–5000 models (SS-3000, SS-5000, GS-3000, GS-5000) were designed for surf and rock fishing, targeting medium to large fish. A 35 mm stroke allowed long casts from shore to reach deeper water, while a progressive drag system provided smooth, reliable control. The high-end Tournament SS models and the more affordable Whisker GS models were released together. GS models had lower specs: fewer bearings, no drag click, and a heavier steel main shaft instead of the SS’s lightweight titanium alloy.
According to the catalogue, the GS-3000 and GS-5000 were ideal for bukkomi fishing from rocky shores and breakwaters. This is a method that involves casting a rig to the bottom and leaving it there to wait for fish to take the bait (that rings a bell..). The catalogue also mentions that the GS models are excellent for targeting large species like red and black sea bream, as well as autumn horse mackerel.
The GS-3000 and GS-5000 were discontinued after 1991. Unlike the SS-3000 and SS-5000, there was no direct successor, although the Super Millionmax GS series was released in 1993 and can be seen as the range successor, replacing the GS-3000, GS-5000 and GS-9000.
Releases
The GS-3000 was released together with the SS-3000 in 1988, while the GS-5000 followed a year later together with the SS-5000 as a JDM model. Some GS-3000 boxes include English and French instructions, suggesting it was also released outside Japan, probably North America. This makes sense, as both the SS-3000 and TS5000T were released for Japan and export, while the SS-5000 and TS5500T remained JDM models.
The GS-3000 came with two 3-degree tapered spools: a black aluminium spool with print and a shallow graphite spool with a gold sticker wrap. The GS-5000 is mostly identical, differing only in the spool, handle and rear cover decals. The ‘power’ handle has a printed decal, just like the SS-5000. This reel came with two deeper 3-degree black aluminium spools for higher line capacity. Both reels were supplied with a corduroy cloth bag and maintenance kit.

Model comparison
Compared to other 3000–5000-35 models, these reels stand out visually with grey metallic bodies, black rotors and spools, and subtle red and gold accents. The bail kicker has no roller, and is white with red lettering. The folding handle features a premium wooden knob.
Technically, the GS-3000 and GS-5000 sit at the lower end of the 3000–5000-35 series. They lack several features found on the other 3000–5000 models: a ball bearing supported worm shaft, a click-adjustable drag knob, and a titanium alloy main shaft, and they have only one ball bearing on the drive gear. The heavier steel main shaft adds a little extra weight overall. Both feature drive gears with a durable black almite finish.
Regarding line capacity, the GS‑3000 graphite spool is the smallest available for the 3000-5000 models. The GS-3000 aluminium spool matches the SS-3000, TS5000T, and TS5000BE. The GS-5000 matches the SS-5000 and TS5500T.

Collectabillity
The GS-3000 and GS-5000 are among the most sought-after cult classic reels. Being GS models, they are harder to find in good condition, as entry-level reels were often handled more roughly in their early years. Both models were also sold for a relatively short period, so the total production numbers are lower than, for example, the SS models. Boxed ones are especially rare. The GS-3000 is already scarce, but the GS-5000 is even harder to come by. During Covid, sets of boxed and mint GS-5000s were going for several thousand pounds in the UK. Prices have since come down, but they’re still very high.
Anglers sometimes end up buying imitation GS reels. The cheaper SS-35 looks quite similar and is sometimes converted into a GS model, fitted with a one-touch handle and replica GS decals. If you know what to look for, it is easy to avoid making a bad buy. Pay close attention to the decal on the back of the stem, as it should read ‘35 long stroke’. This print is missing on the SS-35.
