Longbeam ST-H series
The Longbeam ST-H series are the entry-level models within the Longbeam range. At the time, these JDM reels were Daiwas most affordable large spinning reels specifically designed for long distance casting. They were also the first models to be launched in the Longbeam series, alongside the mid-range GS-H/P models. Despite their stripped down design, the fundamentals remain very strong, featuring skirtless long cast spools, worm gear oscillation, a smooth progressive drag and robust gears. Even today, they can still be found on the banks, valued for both their looks and their durability.
History

Japanese Daiwa catalogue (1994)
The Longbeam series is a wide range of reels designed for long distance casting. The series was available in multiple grades, sizes, and gear ratios to suit different applications, and was developed as a more affordable alternative to the Tournament models.
The ST-H series were the entry-level models. The 1990 Japanese catalogue only mentions: “A compact body with a 30 mm / 35 mm long stroke design,” with little else beyond the basic specs. In the 1994 catalogue, its final appearance, it carried the tagline: ‘Cast heavy lines.”
The reels could be offered at a competitive price by using cheaper components. Compared with the more expensive mid-range GS-H/P series, released at the same time, these reels feature cheaper handle knobs, no bail kicker roller, and bare metal bail wires, line guard shafts and screws. The spool also lacks a polished metal lip. Internally, however, the differences are fairly minor. This series features only one ball bearing, but the gear materials are the same as those used in the GS-H/P models, as is the ceramic line roller. The GS-H/P models were roughly 25% more expensive. In terms of performance, the ST-H series therefore offered better value for money. Also, while the cheaper handle knob may not look and feel as good, it is far more durable, unlike the soft touch handle knobs that are known to deteriorate over time.
Some years after their release, they were rebranded as the PM-H series for export. The Longbeam S-H series was discontinued after 1994 and succeeded by the Emblem S-H series.
Releases
The ST-2000H and ST-3000H were released in 1989, while the ST-5000H and ST-9000H followed a year later. The ST-H models were JDM models, released only in Japan. Like other Longbeam models, it was offered in four sizes. The smallest models, the ST-2000H and ST-3000H, share the same body size and use a 30 mm stroke. The larger ST-5000H and ST-9000H also share a common body size, using a 35 mm stroke instead. The smaller models have a high-speed 5,1:1 gear ratio, the larger models have a slightly different high-speed gear ratio of 4,6:1.
All reels were supplied with a cloth bag and spool reducer, and came in two different boxes: a box with a clear plastic window or a full carton box.

Model comparison
Compared to other models in this family, the Longbeam ST-H series is visually very similar to the PM-H series, with its grey metallic finish and red side decals. The bail kicker has no roller, and is dark grey with a red stripe. The handle with hard plastic knob is identical to that of the PM-H models and, on the smaller sizes only, the Procaster ST-30H.
Technically, the ST-H series sits at the lower end of the Longbeam series. These reels feature only one ball bearing, placed on the pinion gear. In terms of body and rotor material, as well as line roller and gear materials, they are identical to the other models in the Longbeam series, with the exception of the SS series, which clearly stands apart. The ST-H high-speed gear ratios are identical to the PM-H and GS-H models. The graphite spools lack a polished metal spool lip, just like the PM-H series.

Collectabillity
The Longbeam ST-H series can still be found on the banks, although they are not among the most sought-after reels. That’s a bit of a shame, as they’ve got great looks. As JDM models, they are harder to find, especially in mint condition, since entry-level reels were often treated more roughly in their early years. They were also imported from Japan in much smaller numbers than the GS-H/P series.
