Introduction

There is no official definition. However, among collectors and anglers, there are certain reel families that are widely recognised as cult classics. At least one model within these families was originally sold in Europe and became popular here, giving them a clear heritage. 

Technically, the cult classics also share a number of common features that set them apart. Exceptions aside, these were typically Daiwa’s higher-end models from the mid-1980s through the 1990s, primarily designed as long cast reels and featuring some impressive technology for their time: Skirtless spools, worm gear oscillation for excellent line lay, spring-loaded six or ten washer front drags and long lasting lifetime bail springs all helped set them apart. Many of these features still hold up remarkably well today. Another feature often found on these reels is the classic folding handle, preferably fitted with a wooden handle knob. Once a reel ticks those boxes, however, looks can matter more than exact specifications. Once a reel ticks those boxes, looks can matter more than specifications. A striking reel can be more sought after than a technically superior model that doesn’t look as good.

Beyond the technical features and looks, a cult classic usually has a strong reputation among anglers and collectors. It is a reel people remember, look for and still want to own decades later. Rarity, desirability and the reputation of a particular model can all add to its cult status.
